ORNL gathering resources to focus on climate change

A couple of weeks ago, I ran into Oak Ridge National Laboratory Director Thom Mason at a shindig for a newly opened research facility for nuclear safeguards.

We talked for a while about the way ORNL hires its researchers because there’s a likelihood - given the age of the scientific staff and eligibility for retirement - that the lab will be doing a lot of hiring over the next few years.

Mason mentioned that much of the lab’s hiring is based on relationships formed between Oak Ridge researchers and their counterparts at other institutions rather than through traditional advertisements in science publications or unsolicited applications through the Human Resources Department.
