A University of Tennessee supercomputer is still in its infancy, but the powerful machine — known as Kraken — has already made the list of the world’s 500 fastest computers.
Kraken, a Cray XT3 system, debuted on the list at No. 57, with a peak operation of 39 teraflops — or 39 trillion calculations per second. The system is part of the National Institute for Computational Sciences, which is located at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
According to a statement from Thomas Zacharia, UT’s vice president for science and technology and an associate lab director at ORNL, Kraken has only been in operation for a couple of months and soon will be upgraded with new quad-core processors to a capability of 170 teraflops.
