ORNL’s Jaguar is No. 2 fastest computer in the world

Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Jaguar is the world’s second-fastest computer, according to the Top500 rankings released Monday.
The Oak Ridge computer, a Cray XT5 system, recently broke the petaflops barrier – more than a quadrillion mathematical calculations per second – and was declared the fastest machine for open scientific uses.
Overall, it is the second-fastest machine behind the IBM Roadrunner system at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
The Roadrunner is used mostly for national security programs, including classified analysis of nuclear weapons issues.
