Jaguar upgrade could make it the fastest

New processors are being loaded into Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Cray XT5 Jaguar supercomputer, which could become the world’s fastest machine by year’s end.

Buddy Bland, project director of the Leadership Computing Facility, said the upgrade began this week. He said a few of Jaguar’s 200 cabinets were segregated from the rest of the system and are being fitted with new AMD Opteron six-core processors, which are code-named Istanbul. They are replacing the quad-core processors known as Barcelona.

The new processors will be tested to make sure there aren’t issues in the transition or problems running applications on the Jaguar.
