Center for Excellence
The Cray Supercomputing Center for Excellence (CSCE) provides system expertise to facilitate breakthrough science on Cray architectures (i.e., application targeting, porting, optimization, library development, tool development, and training). The center was established by Cray Inc. in collaboration with ORNL.
The CSCE meets with individual research groups to identify codes, requirements, and opportunities; identify “virtual members”; hire people for the center; schedule tasks; and schedule workshops.
John Levesque of Cray heads the center.
The CSCE works closely with the users and with the SCG to port, tune, and optimize the codes and to understand the algorithms. The information gained from this process is taken to Cray’s computer designers, who use it to design future-generation computers that can run problems faster and solve new and different problems. The goal is to create better mapping between the algorithms and the machines and reduce overall time to solution.
