Members of the User Assistance & Outreach (UAO) Group are the first representatives of the NCCS encountered by computer users and the public. UAO is responsible for making access to the NCCS convenient to users, mediating between the outside world and the NCCS, and acquainting the public with the work going on at the NCCS. UAO activities include
- Providing Level I and Level II technical support to researchers
- Setting up accounts for users
- Answering questions about operation of the NCCS high-performance computers
- Creating documentation about the NCCS systems and access policies and procedures
- Producing NCCS publications for the user community and the public
A key UAO function is user advocacy. UAO staff attend the working meetings of the other NCCS groups, sharing information and suggestions from users and participating in decisions as the user’s voice. It has set up several venues for communication between users and the NCCS. It is in charge of communicating outwardly, publishing research highlights and HPCWire articles for the user community and printed and electronic media aimed at the larger scientific community and the public. UAO also coordinates the center’s outreach to educational institutions.
