Overview
This course introduces users to VisIt, a scientific visualization software application developed within DOE for analyzing and visualizing extreme scale simulation datasets. The course begins with an overview of how to use VisIt to access data and create simple visualizations, followed by in-depth coverage of each of VisIt’s plots and operators and when they should be used. The course will then focus on how to visualize subsets of a database and how to create derived variables using expressions. Participants will familiarize themselves with the basics of exploring visualization data using VisIt’s interactive tools. The course will move on to cover VisIt’s pick, lineout, and query capabilities for extracting quantitative data from datasets. Comparison of different time-varying databases will also be covered. The course will conclude by covering topics related to producing presentation quality graphics and movies such as session files, color tables, annotations, lighting, and scripting.
The class alternates lecture discussion with hands-on exercises designed to introduce class participants to VisIt in an interactive setting. An account on ORNL’s analysis cluster, lens, will provided for the class. You will be required to bring your own laptop with VisIt pre-installed. Please download and install an executable copy of VisIt 1.11.2 from http://visit.llnl.gov/download.html before the class. Contact us if you need assistance with installation.
